English Exam Tutoring

Tutoring Services

I successfully assist students to achieve high levels of attainment and progress, breaking down the four English exam papers for GCSE and showing students how they need to use their time and knowledge for each section of the exam.

I believe that private tutoring should be simple and transparent, helping students achieve their potential and most importantly; to believe, achieve and succeed.

MEET Lara Newby

I am a highly qualified Teacher of English having taught in London schools and neighbouring Boroughs for over two decades. My career has contributed to the outstanding success of students meeting or exceeding their target grades at exam level. Rated by Ofsted as an Outstanding practitioner of English throughout my career, my results reflect my extensive experience of both the English Language and English Literature GCSE syllabi and my passion and determination in assisting students in supporting them on their exam journey to reach their chosen destination. Many students comfortably securing Sixth Form and College places and those tutored for A Level exams in English go on to universities of their choices.

LARA NEWBY

I knowingly tailor my lessons to suit the needs of each individual student and acknowledge that exams are essential in obtaining long term achievement. The breadth of my expertise allows me to motivate students and ensure that they feel prepared and ready.

I also instil in students a motivation and enthusiasm for English; helping them feel passionate about the subject.

My results and success are evident through student outcomes. When students begin with me they often struggle accessing exam papers. Their mock grades are lower than their expected target grade. With one-to-one support and intervention many move from a grade 4- the equivalent of a C grade- to a grade 9- equivalent on an A**.

As an experienced Tutor I use my knowledge as an examiner to help students understand the mark scheme and the assessment objectives that they will be assessed on for each paper.

It is paramount that students understand how marks are awarded when they write and how best to manage their time in order to achieve maximum marks for each exam component.

MEET Happy students and parents

Lara supported my daughter with her GCSE preparation from year 9-year 11. My daughter always struggled to find the right tutor that could keep her focussed and motivated.

Lara was different from the rest and took a personal and relatable approach. Elloise could relate to her well and they built a great relationship quickly.

Lara was able to motivate Elloise and get her to complete her work and homework in a fun and engaging way!

Prior to sessions with Lara, Elloise was a reluctant learner and not reaching her full potential.

Each session used a range of teaching styles which benefitted Elloise as she is a kinaesthetic learner. With all the support Elloise got a grade 8 in her English papers and exceeded her expectations.

I can’t thank Lara enough for all hard work and would highly recommend her services.

Mariam Joseph – Year 11 Parent of student at Elstree Screen Arts Academy

Lara is absolutely fantastic. She listens to the children and parents and has a great relationship and understanding of them. They feel more confident as a result of her excellent tutoring and advice.

Eliana Perdios – Parent testimonial with children at both Haberdashers and Aldenham

“Lara was fabulous and encouraging. Catering to my specific requirements, pushing and supporting me in those areas that needed that little bit more support in order to enable me to fulfil my true potential!”

Jake Da’Costa – Former Year 11 student at Yavenh College, Borehamwood

“We are so pleased Lara has come into our lives as an English Tutor to our two boys.  She has been a God send and our boys adore her too. Lara has been providing English tutoring for my youngest son, who is a year 7 student, and my eldest who is a year 11 student. We engaged Lara during year 10 for our eldest son and he has since excelled in this subject, scoring a grade 9 and high grade 8 in both Language and Literature for GCSE for his most recent mock exams.

Lara’s teaching style and approach to learning is excellent.  Out of all the private tuition we have for our boys (Maths and Science) they love learning with Lara the most.  The results speak for themselves and we are very thankful to you for all of the hard work you have done with our boys Lara.

If you are looking for a dedicated English Tutor who can get your child engaged and on the pathway for good results; look no further. Thank you, Lara!”

Mr Sidhpura – Father of children from Woodcote High School, Coulsdon, Surrey

“The sessions with Lara are very interesting and engaging.  The notes that are given are very helpful and straightforward; this makes it easier to understand and makes me feel more confident when writing. I started with Lara at a grade 4 and am currently working on a grade 6/7. We have worked together online for only 5 months. I would 100% recommend the sessions as they have made my ability grow.”

Amelia Michael – Year 11 Student at The Wren Academy (London)

“Lara is a great English Tutor, by far the best tutor I have ever had! She helps me with everything, from advice on things I am unsure on for the GCSE, and also marks my written pieces and giving me amazing feedback every time. I have been working with Lara since I began my KS4 course and she has helped me significantly to double both my Language and Literature grade from a 4 in both to an 8! She is an outstanding tutor and is always so positive. I wish other tutors could the care and compassion that Lara does.”

Aaryan Sidhpura – Year 11 Student at Woodcote High School, Coulsdon, Surrey

“My son was in his last stages of Year 11 and was not feeling confident in certain areas of English.  Having failed his mock exams in December in both Language and Literature, we thought we should boost his confidence with some extra tuition.  Never in a million years did we think we would be lucky enough to find someone as exceptional and amazing as Lara. She has given Max the confidence, enthusiasm, and knowledge to apply within his English. With the guidance and dedication, as well as constant encouragement, Max has gone from one extreme to the other in less than 4 months! He achieved a grade 6 in his second set of mock exams in February and he now knows he has the ability to succeed in anything he puts his mind to.  I truly believe that this is all because of Lara’s amazing teaching skills.  Lara is one of the most gifted teachers with a kind and caring nature which has given Max the confidence that I think will stay with him throughout his life.”

Madeline Woodham – Parent of a Year 11 Student at Mount Grace School, Potters Bar, Hertfordshire

“Lara was a very good tutor.  Always giving me lots of good advice and enabling me to progress.”

Nathan Da’Costa – Former Year 11 student at Yavenh College, Borehamwood

“I think Lara is the best English Teacher I have ever had!  She has improved my reading, writing and structuring my work properly. She takes time to help me understand my work and makes me want to do my best.  I really like Lara and I get excited every Tuesday to work with her.”

Devaan Sidhpura – Year 7 Student at Woodcote High School, Coulsdon, Surrey

“A big thank you to Lara for tutoring both of our boys in English Language and Literature at GCSE. Lara was always helpful and went the extra mile. Highly recommend.”
